Global expertise in insurance

The majority of our insurance-related work is international in nature. We draw on the Firm’s overseas legal network to cover every aspect of our clients’ cross-border transport, insurance and dispute matters.

Our team combines in-depth knowledge of Finnish insurance law with practical experience in shipping, maritime and transport sectors. This allows us to provide hands-on, commercially focused solutions in complex claims and coverage questions.

Insurance companies and regulation in Finland

Subject to obtaining a licence from the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority, an insurance company may be established either as a limited liability company or as a mutual insurance company in accordance with the Finnish Insurance Companies Act (521/2008, as amended, FI: vakuutusyhtiölaki). The Act is largely based on corresponding EU regulation.

The Foreign Insurance Companies Act (398/1995, as amended, FI: laki ulkomaisista vakuutusyhtiöistä) regulates and applies to foreign insurance companies operating in Finland.

International aspect of insurance assignments

A significant proportion of our insurance assignments concerns international transports, multimodal logistics chains and cross-border trade. We frequently work at the intersection of international trade , transport and maritime law and insurance law.

Our Firm is recognised for handling complex insurance and recourse claims successfully, both before the courts and in out-of-court settlements. Whether the case concerns cargo damage, a recourse claim or a defective product, we ensure that our clients’ rights are protected in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Dispute resolution in insurance matters

Disputes related to insurance policies may be brought before a local District Court or, alternatively, to the Insurance Board – an alternative dispute resolution body jointly founded by the insurance companies operating in Finland. For some particular types of insurance, disputes must be filed with the Insurance Court or with an average adjuster instead of a District Court as the first instance.

We represent clients in insurance-related disputes before courts and alternative dispute resolution bodies and, when appropriate, coordinate strategy together with our Dispute Resolution & Arbitration team. Our aim is always to reach a practical and commercially sensible outcome for the client.
